I've started to play WoW again, at least on a casual basis, doing random heroics and thereby I happened to need a character planner. So after quite a while i myself used chardev and even though I noticed some minor calculation errors, the not noteworthy kind, I was pleased that it is fulfilling it's purpose as a tool showing the impact of changed gear/gems/etc. on your stats. Chardev is not RAWR-like nor is it supposed to be, i guess there is a market for both kinds of tools.

However, at the moment I'm not quite sure if there'll be a new chardev with cataclysm. Needless to say, the severe changes in the game mechanics/stats result in rather extensive changes within the WoW game files and thereby make a (nearly complete) recode of chardev's core inevitable.

As I'm lucky to have a beta account, i started right away, but it's just a lot work and blizzard isn't making it easy. Okay, they never did and why should they? The problem are not the difficulties but the impossibilities. I figured the SpellScaling out (at a time even WoWHead didn't get it entirely right) and created a beta talent planner.

Yesterday after nearly two weeks of real work (no not the kind you get money for, i mean the kind where you get your hands dirty and drown you physical exhaustion in alcohol) I wanted to start with the items, the new stats, the unified armor/damage values etc. First the beta servers are down for two days and now the ItemCache.wdb files are gone and instead there is a Item-spare.adb, which is not only sparse but also volatile, as it is overwritten every time you logout.
The uploaded ItemCache files were the basis of the chardev item database, they contained all items ever (at least till the last patch) seen in game. With the new Item-spare.adb I'm not sure how to maintain an up-to-date item database.

Needless to say, without an item database chardev is very very useless...
